Every homeowner dreads the thought of a burst pipe. This common household mishap is particularly likely to happen during the cold months, when there’s a risk of water freezing and splitting an already weak pipe. The leak can cause serious damage to your home if you don’t act fast. Here’s what to do in the event of a burst pipe in your house.

1. Call an Emergency Plumber

The first step is to call a qualified plumber. While you can still take action to minimize the damage, only a plumber can repair the pipe. Keep the number of a 24-hour plumber on hand so you’ll always have someone to call in an emergency.

2. Shut Off the Water Main

Next, stop the flow of water by turning off the water main. In most homes, the shut-off valve is located in the basement, crawl space, or next to your water heater. The shut-off valve could also be outside near the street under a metal lid. Ideally, all family members should locate this valve before an issue arises.
If there is any risk that the water may reach electrical outlets, turn off the electricity as well.

3. Drain Water from the Pipes

The burst pipe will continue to leak as long as water remains in the system. Thus, you’ll want to open all the cold faucets to drain the water. Next, move on to the toilets, flushing them until they are empty. Finally, drain water from the hot taps and your water heater (if you have a tank water heater).

These steps will remove all the water from the system, leaving no water left to freeze. They will also release pressure in the system to help contain the leak.

4. Prevent Future Bursts

After a plumber has come to fix the pipe, water damage has been addressed, and you’ve documented everything to show your insurance company, it’s time to make sure you never experience a burst pipe again. Install insulation around the pipes and fix any leaks in your home that are allowing cold air to enter.
